True Fashion Lovers: Sue Kreitzman — The Human Art Gallery
Chapter 29: A series celebrating people who express their soul through fashion, style, and the way they live.
“I’m a walking collage; a human art gallery. It’s an exhilarating way of life.”
Welcome back to the True Fashion Lovers series.
In our last chapter, we stepped into the ceremonial “DECOFOLK” world of Cyd-Kassandra. Today, we meet a woman who has spent decades proving that beige is not a color—it’s a surrender.
Meet Sue Kreitzman (@suekreitzman).
Born in NYC in 1940 and now a cornerstone of the UK art scene, Sue is a “color maniac” in the most glorious sense. She doesn’t follow fashion trends; she follows the pulse of art. For Sue, getting dressed is an act of curation. She carries her mentors, her heroes, and her own creations on her back, flaunting them as a gift to every stranger she passes on the street.
A Note from Junghyun:
It is a profound honor to host Sue in this series. When I read her answers, I felt a deep sense of awe for a life lived with zero apologies and zero fear of judgment. She introduced me to the giant ‘Nanas’ of Niki de St Phalle, and in doing so, she reminded me that art is not something that stays on a museum wall—it is something that should breathe, move, and walk alongside us.
Sue’s style is a reminder that fashion can be a tool for mental health, a source of joy for the public, and a brave declaration of who we are. Let’s enter the “colourlicious” world of a true outsider artist.
Please briefly introduce yourself.
I'm Sue Kreitzman. I was born in NYC in 1940 but moved to the UK forty years ago. I am an artist and a color fanatic.
What made you fall in love with fashion?
It’s not so much fashion that I love, but colour and art.
I have huge collections of art: my own art and that of people I love and mentor. When I leave the house, I can’t bear toleave it behind.
So I wear it!
Every day!
I design my clothes and I create my special neckshrines, and I flaunt them. In everyone’s face. My face too.
I want people to become aware of the power of colour and the joy of art.
I’m a walking collage; a human art gallery.
It’s an exhilarating way of life.
What items are you enjoying the most these days?
Crocs are the most comfortable shoes for me if I actually want to—you know—walk around.
So I buy them in all colours. I paint them and embellish them. I wear them all the time and I adore them. People always comment on them—in a good way!
And my neckshrines are powerful, fun, and engaging. I love them dearly. I can’t do without them.
Is there a person or brand that has influenced your style?
Frida Kahlo, Niki de St Phalle, Henri Rousseau.
Where do you usually get fashion inspiration?
International Folk art, especially African and Mexican.
Street art and graffiti. Outsider art (I myself am an outsider artist).
And of course, my deep love of colour.
What does fashion mean to you?
Fashion—that is, my style and way of dressing—defines my life and personality. It communicates who I am, what I love, and how I view the world.
It’s good for my mental health, and that of the people who see me on the street.
I’ll never change.
When you express yourself through fashion, what aspect of yourself do you most want to highlight?
The colour maniac, the art lover and artist, and the boldness to wear whatever I love and believe in—with no apology and no fear of judgement.
How would you describe your personal style in one sentence?
My personal style is vividly colourful, slightly bonkers, and uniquely personal.
How would you describe your wardrobe in three words?
Profound. Meaningful. Colourlicious.
Sue reminds us that the street is our gallery and our bodies are the canvas. Her “neckshrines” aren’t just jewelry; they are protective, powerful icons of a life lived in full radiance. As she says, wearing your soul is an exhilarating way of life.
Thank you, Sue, for teaching us the bravery of color.
With ❤️,
Junghyun
